August is the month when the Musical Odyssey gets young loud and snotty - in other words, punk arrives and blows our rickety craft out of the water. Punk gave a generation a can-do attititude. Fancy musicianship was out - three chords were in. Anybody could do it, and anybody did! This month I'll be playing British punk, courtesy of the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Undertones and more, and I'll also be playing the US bands that influenced, and were influenced by punk, notably Pere Ubu, the Patti Smith Group and Television. I'll also be considered a much less hip but equally important musical movement : disco. Would modern music be the same if there'd be no Chic? I'll also be playing music by Donna Summer, Thelma Houston and Crown Heights Affair, as well as the band that got me into real funk : Cameo, or the codpiece that ate America (fnurr fnurr!) The period after punk has been called New Wave, it's also been called Post-Punk. Whatever you call it, it's got some of my all-time favourite bands : the Gang of Four, Echo & the Bunnymen, the Teardrop Explodes, but particularly the mighty Joy Division. And there's
more : Bruce Springsteen makes an appearance, so do Dexys Midnight Runners,
the Birthday Party (featuring Hove's favourite adopted Aussie, Nick Cave),
lots of reggae, and the record that ushered in a whole new genre : Grandmaster
Flash's epistle from the projects The Message. If you've
listened to the show and want to get in touch, you can email Phil at :
